The subject of this paper is assisted suicide. Assisted suicide is a big topic right now, and one that I personally feel strongly about. Assisted suicide is the idea that if a person has a terminal illness, they should have the right to forgo treatment if they feel it will make their remaining time worse. They are given a pill that will end their life when their illness gets to be too much. This is such a hot topic currently because of Brittany Maynard, who passed away November 1st. Maynard was a 29 year old from California, who moved to Oregon in order to be able to choose assisted suicide. Maynard had terminal brain cancer, and didn’t want to spend the few months she had left on earth undergoing treatments, which would basically cause her massive amounts of pain and take her last remaining months away from her and her family. When reading this, the first question I had, and the first question I will be addressing in this paper, was where this idea had come from. What was the history of people forgoing medical treatment in favor of taking their own lives? Another question, the more pressing, was why should this be illegal? Why shouldn’t people whose lives are without a doubt going to end be given a say in how and when their stories end. The history of assisted suicide is surprisingly long.
